*ISDII Warrior - Zone 2 Level 30, Sigma Commander's Office* It was probably for the best, Len thought, you never would have settled down. But for her to die, especially like that... The door chime buzzed. Len straightened himself out, "Who is it?" "It's Spiffy, open up!" Chuckling Len keyed the door to open, "Thank the Force you're here. Close the door we need to talk." Spiffy's smile disappeared, "What happened Len?" "Remember Zabe?" Len went over to his liquor cabinet. "How could I forget," Spiffy sat on the couch along the side wall to the left of Len's desk, "you had like the biggest crush on her at the Academy..." Spiffy stopped. There was a pause as Len got two glasses and produced a single bottle of Whyren's Reserve NN182, one of the rarest Corellian Whiskeys around. Len poured two glasses slowly, making sure none of it dripped. Len looked at the label as he put it away, "At the Academy, we always said whoever got married first would get the bottle," he let out a heavy sigh, "I got married a week ago to Zabell Bransk, but I couldn't tell anyone because of regulations." Puzzled Spiffy asked, "I thought being married to another member of the service was permitted?" Len handed him the drink, and sat at the other end. "It is," Len took a sip of the whiskey, "unless one of you is a member of Imperial Intelligence." "She got recruited??" Spiffy to a sip from his, reacting a bit to the strong taste. "Right after we graduated. We saw each other a few times when she was on the Warrior. Nothing serious at first, but after a while we found we had a connection. We decided to get married in secret, she was going to transfer to the Navy next month and work with Naval Intelligence as a Watcher." Len finished his drink, "She was assigned to hunt down the mole we're chasing, but...he got to her first." Spiffy stared at his glass, "I want to be angry you didn't tell me, but I guess I understand." "We were going to have a public ceremony and everything," Len smiled, "and we could have shared this bottle in happier times." Spiffy smiled, "We will." "When? After Zabe comes back from the dead?" Len steamed. "No," came the reply, calmer than Len ever heard before from his friend, "When her killer is floating in space."... |
